Šmartno pri Litiji (Eng. St. Martin in Littai ) is a municipality in the Lower Carniola region of Slovenia.

Location and population

In the overall community consisting of 54 villages and hamlets, 5,284 people live. The main town Šmartno pri Litiji has 1,456 inhabitants and is located on 245 m height. The community is located 40 km east of Ljubljana.

History

Because of its ore deposits Šmartno pri Litiji was already inhabited in ancient times. Most residents were active up to the present time in mining.

The famous polymath Vajkard Valvasor had in the oldest house in town, the Bogenšperk Castle (German: Wagensberg ), his studio.
