Solliès-Ville

Solliès -Ville is a commune with 2485 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

The ancient village of Solliès -Ville is located on a hill that overlooks the Gapeautal. Below is Solliès -Pont in the plane, which is famous for its fruit orchards, where especially cherries and figs are grown.

History

Solliès -Ville was formerly part of the community Solliès, which was divided in 1799 into the communities Solliès -Ville, Solliès -Pont, Solliès- Toucas Solliès- Farlède.

Attractions

  • The church is an interesting Romanesque building. Inside you can see on the left a beautiful altarpiece from the 17th century. There is another altarpiece from the 14th century Between this and the pulpit. The main altar, which is provided with a ciborium from the 15th century, consists of a single, 6 m high stone. The organ was also built in the 15th century by a monk. It consists of walnut and is one of the oldest organs in France. In the crypt is the tomb of the Lords of Solliès.

Personalities

  • The poet, novelist and playwright Jean Aicard (1848-1921) had a house in Solliès -Ville, which is visited by many admirers of the poet. In the house a small museum.
