The South Western Highway is a highway in the south west of the Australian state of Western Australia. It connects the South Coast Highway in Walpole on the south coast of the country with the Albany Highway in Armadale ( southeast of the capital Perth ). From Walpole to Bunbury, a port city on the west coast of Western Australia, the South Western Highway part of the National Highway 1, which leads around the Australian continent, from there to the north it is a state road 20 (S20 ) were reported.

Course

The South Western Highway starts in Walpole, where it forms a continuation of the South Coast Highway ( R1) via Esperance and Albany to Walpole.

After Walpole South Western Highway passes first through sparsely populated areas. Along the route there are vast forests, home to many animal and plant species, and are protected by several national parks. Special recognition have thereby the Karribäume (Eucalyptus diversicolor ) are in the Valley of the Giants to see the Walpole Nornalup - National Park.

Larger cities along the route of the South Western Highway are Manjimup, Bridgetown and Donnybrook, before reaching around 250 km away Bunbury. Bunbury is the second largest city in Western Australia. The South Western Highway runs for several years in a wide arc around the city. At the northeastern end of the Old Coast Road ( R1) branches off, which leads from there directly to the coast to the north and from the name Bunbury Highway 1 from the South Western Highway takes over.

The South Western Highway runs from Bunbury to further inland, about 20-30 km from the coast. He follows an old railway line, past the towns of Brunswick Junction, Harvey, Waroona and Pinjarra.

After about 160 km, the highway reaches the city of Armadale. There he meets the Albany Highway ( S30), which is the direct link between Perth and Albany. Here the South Western Highway has reached its end. On the Albany Highway, there are still 28 km to the center of Perth.
