Soyhières

Soyhières is a municipality in the district Delémont the canton of Jura in Switzerland. Despite its location on the linguistic border of the former German name suckers is not well known and is used sporadically only in the immediate vicinity.

Geography

Soyhières is located on 402 m above sea level. M., 3.5 km north- northeast of the cantonal capital of Delémont ( straight line ). The village is located at the northern edge of the valley of the Birs, at the mouth of the stream of Mettembert, in the heavily chambered hills of the northern Jura.

The area of ​​7.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Jura Mountains north of Dels Berger basin. The southern border is the most Birs. From here, the area extends over the lower part of the valley of Mettembert and its tributary valleys that break through canyons in the Jura mountain chains and have emerged partly striking crags. The municipality comprises the heights of La Joux ( 817 m above sea level. M. ) and L' Aibet ( German Äbi, 747 m above sea level. M. ) and extends all the way to the north on the hare Schell, of 840 m above sea level. M. on the floor of Soyhières forms the highest point of the municipality. In the east Soyhières owns a small stake on the northern slope of the Fringelikette. From the municipality surface 1997 6 % came from settlements, 63 % of forest and shrubs, 30 % to agriculture and slightly more than 1% was unproductive land.

To Soyhières include the hamlet of Ried -Dessus ( German Oberrieder Forest), 386 m above sea level. M. in the deep valley of the Birs between the Äbi and Fringelikette, as well as several individual farms. Neighboring communities of Soyhières are Courroux, Delémont, Mettembert and Movelier in the Canton of Jura and Rye Castle and Lies mountain in the canton of Basel-Landschaft.

Population

With 483 inhabitants ( as at 31 December 2012) is one Soyhières to the smaller municipalities of the canton of Jura. Of the 77.4 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 17.2 % German-speaking and Italian- 2.2 (as of 2000). The population of Soyhières amounted in 1850 to 279 residents in 1900 to 507 inhabitants. During the 20th century several large fluctuations were registered; the previous high was recorded in 1910 with 592 residents.

Economy

The previously dominated by the agriculture community has developed in recent decades to the living village. There are few jobs outside the agricultural sector in the village. Many workers (over 50 %) are therefore commuters and work mainly in the near Delémont or Laufental and in the Basel region.

Traffic

The community is conveniently moderately well developed. It lies on the main road from Basel to Delémont. On September 25, 1875 the Jura Bahn Basel was - Delémont opened with a station in Soyhières, but this is shut down and the trains go by. Soyhières is only connected by bus lines that run from Delémont in the communities of the North Jura, on public transport.

History

First mention of the village is 1102 Sougere, later the name Sogren ( 1131 ) and Soihière appear. Soyhières belonged to the counts of the castle Soyhières, standing on a Felskrete south of the municipality, but part of the municipality of Courroux. The Count managed to Sornegau, who came to the counts of Alsace Ferrette in the 13th century. 1271 Soyhières was sold to the Prince-Bishopric of Basel. Between 1793 and 1815, the village belonged to France and was initially part of the département du Mont- Terrible, associated from 1800 with the Department of Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna Soyhières came in 1815 to the canton of Bern and on 1 January 1979 at the newly founded Canton Jura.

The hamlet of Ried -Dessus came in 1856 by Courroux to Soyhières, but still forms a separate civil parish.

Attractions

The present parish church was built in 1936-39 on the site of earlier building of 1715. In the crypt is the grave of the village priest, Père Jean -Pierre Blanchard, who died in 1824. In the center stands the house Chappuis, the former inn zum Weissen Kreuz from the mid-18th century, which now houses a school for girls. The Chapel of Notre- Dame de Lourdes stands on a ridge north of the village. Another chapel is located in Ried -Dessus. In a gorge to the north of Soyhières the fish pond Etang de la Reselle was dammed in 1994.

Famous people

  • Mary de Sales Chappuis (1793-1875), Swiss-French nun, Mother Superior of the Visitation monasteries in Troyes and Paris, inspired the French Father Louis Brisson establishing the Oblates of St.. Francis de Sales.
