Srednyaya Akhtuba

Srednjaja Akhtuba (Russian Средняя Ахтуба ) is an urban-type settlement in Volgograd Oblast (Russia) with 14,431 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is 25 km due east of Oblastverwaltungszentrums Volgograd and about 10 km southeast of the center of the city Wolschski on the left bank of the Akhtuba, the more than 500 km long left tributary of the Volga.

Srednjaja Akhtuba is the administrative center of the Rajons Sredneachtubinski. The settlement forms as the only town a town ( gorodskoje posselenije ).

History

According to local lore, the settlement to have been founded in 1668 by the wounded, who had previously drawn by Stenka Razin Cossack Tsaritsyn left there. However, official status was the only place in 1758 by the artillery officer and later commander of Tsaritsyn Ivan Zypljatew; to have lived at this time there already 3000 people. The name refers to the river and means Middle Akhtuba.

1928 Srednjaja Akhtuba administrative seat of a newly created Rajons 1959 it received the status of an urban-type settlement.

Economy and infrastructure

In the settlement, there are companies in the food and construction industries.

Through the village leads the regional road that continues from Volgograd on Wolschki down the Akhtuba to Astrakhan. In Srednjaja Akhtuba branches off a side road, which crosses the Akhtuba there, from the small town Krasnoslobodsk on the left bank of the Volga towards Volgograd. The nearest train station is located in Wolschski along the route Volgograd - Astrakhan.
