Nikolayevsk

Nikolaievsk (Russian Николаевск ) is a town in Volgograd Oblast (Russia) with 15,075 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 190 km north of the Volgograd Oblasthauptstadt and extends about four kilometers along the left bank of the Volgograd Reservoir of the Volga. The nearest towns are Kamyshin ( on the opposite bank of the Volga - eight kilometers north-west of Nikolaievsk located ) and Petrov Wal (21 km north-west of Nikolaievsk ).

The city is the administrative center of the Nikolaievsk Rajons same name ( district ) of the oblast.

History

The town was founded in 1747 as Dmitriev and was originally settlers from Kamyshin (then Dmitrijewsk ) inhabits that operated on a nearby lake salt production. Towards the end of the 18th century a consecrated to Saint Nicholas of Myra church was built in the place and the occasion of his Dmitriev 1794 in Nikolayev Sloboda ( " Nicholas settlement " ) renamed.

The industrial salt production in the city lasted until the end of the 19th century and counted up to their attitude to the main employment Ender local population. After setting the promotion you started to use the lake for mud baths.

Began in 1952 with the construction of the Stalingrad hydroelectric damming of the Volga in the region of Nikolaievsk. For this reason, the settlement was moved nine kilometers downstream in the 1950s. The old town with historic buildings was completely flooded and 1960.

On June 29, 1967 Nikolaievsk received city rights under the present name.

Economy and Transport

As the center of a traditional agriculturally oriented Rajons Nikolaievsk comprises mainly food manufacturing companies. There are also in the town a furniture factory and a brickyard. In Rajon places crude oil is produced.

Nikolaievsk has a dock for cargo ships on the Volga River and is connected via a country road with Wolschski and Volgograd. The nearest railway station is in Kamyshin.
