Gorodishche, Volgograd Oblast

Gorodischtsche (Russian Городище ) is an urban-type settlement in Volgograd Oblast (Russia) with 21,381 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is situated about ten kilometers north- west of the center Oblasthauptstadt Volgograd and directly follows on from this.

Gorodischtsche is the administrative center of the same name, founded in 1977 Rajons Gorodischtsche.

History

The village was founded in 1827 Gorodischtsche of evacuees from the village of Uwarowo Ujesds Borisoglebsk ( at that time the government of Tambov ). Until 1842 settled here, in the valleys Mokraja Metschetka and Koren Well to other farmers. Especially many resettlers of the second wave came from the village of Gorodischtsche Ujesds Borisoglebsk, so that the new village received the same name.

Since the word in Russian Gorodischtsche generally stands for remains of former settlements or fortifications, says another, less probable version, the village had arisen in place of several smaller Tatar settlements. According to legend, the emir (or Khan) Mamai the Golden Horde should have stopped at the Battle of Kulikovo Pole in 1380 with his cavalry at the Mokraja Metschetka. From 1718 here ran the Tsaritsyn line of defense at the former southern border of the Russian Empire; was located near the fortress Metschetnaja.

The today Gorodischtsche belonging spots ( Chutor ) Kamenny Bujerak was also founded in the early 19th century by Christianized Kalmyks and therefore was originally called Kalmyzkaja Kolonija ( " Kalmückenkolonie ").

During World War II place was during the Battle of Stalingrad in the immediate area of combat operations. Named after the mentioned Emir Mamaev, during the battle fiercely competitive Mamajew Hill is only eight kilometers away.

1959 Gorodischtsche received the status of an urban-type settlement.

Culture and sights

In and around Gorodischtsche there is a row in the Battle of Stalingrad reminiscent memorials, the Memorial Soldatskoje poles ( " Soldiers Field " ) on the western edge directly on the highway M6 and various, erected as memorials military equipment.

The settlement has two Russian Orthodox churches, one of which, built 1850-1900 Church of the Icon of the Mother of God "All mourners joy " ( церковь иконы Божией Матери " Всех скорбящих Радость " / Tserkov ikony Boschijei material " Wsech skorbjaschtschich Radost "), which is currently being restored.

Economy and infrastructure

Gorodischtsche is the center of an agricultural area with various factories for processing agricultural products. In recent decades, the place grew particularly because of its proximity to the city of Volgograd, as urbanization and location of different utilities and plants.

In the settlement, the station Rasguljajewka which opened on this section 1871 railway Moscow-Volgograd is located ( route km 1062). To the west of Gorodischtsche passes the highway M6, which also connects with Moscow Volgograd and continues to Astrakhan.
