Svetly Yar, Svetloyarsky District, Volgograd Oblast

Svetly Yar (Russian Светлый Яр ) is an urban-type settlement in Volgograd Oblast (Russia) with 12,537 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The village is situated some 30 km south-east of the center of Volgograd Oblastverwaltungszentrums and within 10 km of the south-eastern city limits on the right bank of the Volga there 1.7 km wide.

Svetly Jar is the administrative center of the Rajons Swetlojarski and seat of the municipality Swetlojarskoje gorodskoje posselenije, ( west 4 km) which also includes the settlements Krasnoflotski and Sadowy (8 miles west) and located on the opposite bank of the Volga Weiler ( Chutor ) Barbaschi (6 km north-west ) and Gromki (8 km east-northeast ) belong.

History

The town was founded before 1793 as a fishing settlement, initially under the name Lutschki. Soon after, he received the current name, from Russian Svetly for bright and jar for a steep riverbank.

In 1950 the settlement was the administrative seat of the existing since 1928 Krasnoarmeiski rayon, whose original, eponymous center Krasnoarmeisk was incorporated in 1931 in the former Stalingrad. 1959 Svetly Jar was given the status of an urban-type settlement, 1960 Rajon was renamed after the settlement.

Traffic

Just south of the village leads (formerly M6) over the federal highway R22 Kaspi, which begins south of Moscow and further the right bank of the Volga to Volgograd and runs from there down to Astrakhan.

In a commercial area and fuel storage between Svetly Jar and Krasnoflotski ends a freight connection line, which (on the Volgograd city area ) of the route Volgograd at the Sarepta train station - branches Tikhoretskaya.
