Geographical Location

Stödtlen is situated in 438-552 meters altitude between the Alb foothills and the Franks height in the Middle Franconian basin.

Neighboring communities

The municipality is bordered to the north by Words to live by, on the east by the Bavarian community Mönchsroth, to the south Tannhausen and to the west by the city Ellwangen and Ellenberg.

History

For the first time Stödtlen is mentioned in a document dated 5 February 1024. Emperor Henry II invested in this document, the monastery Ellwangen with the Forestry Law (Charm Forest ) in Virngrund. Stedilinum is listed as a boundary point of Virngrundwaldes. In later documents of the place also Stedelin, Stettlin, Stedtlem, Stedelingen is called. Stödtlin, Stöttle, Stödtle and Stödtlin: then the letter E appears in place names in the 17th century.

During the Peasants' War, farmers joined from Stödtlen and Birkenzell at the Ellwanger bunch who plundered the monastery Mönchsroth on 28 and 29 April 1525 and set on fire. It also burned down 32 houses of the village. After the suppression of the rebellion 15 farmers from Stödtlen and 13 were sentenced Birkenzell to fines.

The districts and residential places of the municipality belonged over time to changing dominions, most recently for Prince Provost Ellwangen. Religions
