Suat Hayri Ürgüplü

Suat Hayri Ürgüplü ( born August 13, 1903 in Damascus, Ottoman Empire, † 1981 in Istanbul) was a Turkish politician and Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey.

Ürgüplü was the son of Scheichülislams Ürgüplü Mustafa Efendi Hayri, who in his fatwa of 14 November 1914 called jihad by proclamation of the Declaration of War by Sultan Mehmed V against the enemies of the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. Ürgüplü comes from the family of the Grand Vizier Damat İbrahim Pasha Nevşehirli.

Ürgüplü graduated from Galatasaray High School. In 1926 he graduated from the Faculty of Law at the Darülfünun. He then worked in various positions as a civil servant. He was also active as an athlete in a sports club Galatasaray. Ürgüplü worked 1929-1932 as a judge of the Commercial Court of İstanbul.

In 1939 he was elected as a deputy of the province of Kayseri in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. In the second Saracoglu government Ürgüplü was minister for customs and monopolies. After embezzlement had been addressed with respect to coffee imports against him, he announced:

"It was established in my Ministry regarding the Kaffeeveruntreuung, in the fall my name a commission. For this investigation body may work in peace, I have to separate me from my chair, otherwise I would affect the Commission, it would come at a correct judgment. For this reason, from a political ethics, I will resign. "

Subsequently Ürgüplü was acquitted by the State Court ( yüce divan ).

In 1950 he returned to the Parliament. Until 1952 he was a member of the Parti Democrat for the province of Kayseri. For some time Ürgüplü was Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council. In 1952 he was summoned ambassador to Bonn. In 1955, he was Ambassador of Turkey in the Embassy in London, in 1959 in the Embassy in Washington and in 1960 in Madrid. In the elections of 1961 he was elected senator of the province of Kayseri and at the same time as the first President of the Senate. After the Prime Minister İsmet İnönü had resigned on 5 February 1965 Ürgüplü from the Adalet Partisi was appointed Prime Minister. He remained in this office until the elections of 10 October 1965. 1966 he was elected senator and contingent remained until 1972 in this position.

Ürgüplü was the information provided by the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Turkey, according to a Freemason.

His grave is located on the martyrs cemetery Edirnekapı.
