History

The SWR was first created on January 1, 1998 as a foundation by the two German states. On August 30, 1998, he took over the transmit mode of SDR and SWF. After a one-month implementation phase of the SWR was on October 1 and his successors predecessor institutions. This way the state governments had a mere merger of two institutions, as they became the RBB practiced in the merger between SFB and ORB around 2003, brought forward. The State Treaty on the South-West broadcasting had already been signed on 31 May 1997. In the State Treaty, the obligation to objectivity and plurality of its reporting and the anchored " cultural mandate of public service broadcasting ".

Director of the radio station in 1998, which up to this time acting director of the SWF, Peter Voss. On 1 December 2006, the former Executive Director Peter Boudgoust was elected directors. He took up office on 1 May 2007.

The path to fusion

The merger of the Southwest German Radio special case was terminated. Until 1998, Baden- Württemberg was the only one German state two different regional broadcasters for the northern and southern part of the country - one of which was also responsible for yet another state. This specific case was historically justified: The SWF was founded after the Second World War as a transmitter for the French zone of occupation with the states of Baden, Württemberg -Hohenzollern and Rhineland -Palatinate, the SDR for the state of Württemberg -Baden the American occupation zone. 1952, the states of Baden, Württemberg -Hohenzollern and Württemberg- Baden merged to the new state of Baden- Württemberg, without changing the broadcast jurisdiction.

While both companies (and the Saarland Rundfunk ( SR ) ) in television and from 1972 also in the cultural radio programs (SWF 2, SDR 2, SR 2 ) from the beginning closely cooperated, the partnership has in the other radio to individual community programs. Different corporate cultures and program philosophies as well as the fact that in a large part of Baden-Württemberg both the programs of the SWF as well as that of the SDR were to receive, and have been used, leading to a competitive relationship between the two institutions and one sometimes open courting of " foreign listeners ." Particularly pronounced in the competitive relationship between the creators and listeners of the two Popwellen SWF3 and SDR was 3

Since the 1970s, various scenarios for a reordering of broadcasting in the southwest were discussed. The focus was mainly two models in the foreground, on the one hand, the merger of SDR, SWF and SR to a three-country institution modeled after the North German Radio, on the other hand, the resolution of Südwestfunk with the expansion of the SDR jurisdiction the whole of Baden - Württemberg and the SR to Rhineland -Palatinate. Since there was considerable resistance against each of these two models - the one was a three-country institution too big, the other a radio station too small for Rhineland- Palatinate and Saarland -, the status quo was maintained. In 1988, the then Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Lothar Späth a first initiative for the fusion of SDR and SWF without the participation of the Saarland. It failed at this approach, but were SDR and SWF 1991 merger of its two cultural programs ( from 2 SDR and SWF 2 was S2 culture) and committed to the creation of a joint fourth radio program for Baden- Württemberg ( Baden- Württemberg S4 ). The cooperation with the SR in the radio sector was terminated unilaterally, but continued in the television sector. 1997 launched the jointly held, but only in the first Digital Radio DAB widespread youth radio program DasDing.

After the state elections in 1996 both directors (Peter Voss, Hermann Fünfgeld ) and both the Prime Minister launched ( Erwin Teufel, Kurt Beck), a new fusion initiative, which culminated in 1997 in the treaty on the Southwest Broadcasting. Especially in the SDR- transmission area and in the SDR itself, the State Treaty was varied criticized because they interpreted it as a hostile takeover of the SDR by the SWF. In fact, after the merger, the most central facilities of the institution most line items were concentrated in the former SWF headquarters in Baden -Baden, staffed with former SWF staff. The new radio programs of the SWR -oriented significantly more of the former than of the SWF where the SDR.

Since the merger

The merger of two country stations have been set up in the SWR with wide-ranging powers and own structures. Trade journals, especially the SDR were dismantled, re-opened for numerous correspondent offices in the transmission area. Accordingly, subject-specific professional programs were reduced in both the radio as on TV and strengthens the regional coverage.

In 2000, the SWR was allowed to take FM frequency for its youth program DasDing in operation, which was forbidden to him until then. 2002 SWR started cont.ra. its information program SWR In 2005, the SWR from RBB responsibility for the digital television EinsPlus. Between 2006 and 2008, the SWR terrestrial television broadcast operation from the old analog PAL standard to the new digital standard DVB- T around. 2011 saw the launch of the SWR with the broadcast of his radio programs in digital DAB standard. On January 9, 2012 SWR cont.ra was replaced by SWRinfo.

Since 30 April 2012, the SWR television in high definition HDTV via satellite is receivable, the analog satellite signal was turned off.

2007 sparked Peter Boudgoust Peter Voss from as Intendant, 2011 Boudgoust was re-elected. Since the inauguration of Boudgoust the SWR drives a rigid austerity in the program. Thus, a reduction of the budget by a quarter compared to 2010 was announced for the cultural program SWR2 2020.
