Suicide door

Suicide door is a car door is colloquially called, is not forward, but hinged at the rear. This design is more convenient because of the larger space available when getting in and out ( keep clear of passing area next to the car and grabbed more favorable position of the door opener) in the rule. The combination chipped front front doors and hinged rear doors in the rear is called the portal door. Will it also dispenses with the B-pillar, this solution offers the ultimate in convenience when getting in and out. Rear-hinged rear doors were common since the early days of closed bodies.

Hazards caused by doors

The rear-hinged doors were banned in Germany in 1961 because they are not pressed shut in case of accidental opening when in motion by the wind, but torn abruptly. In the worst case, the occupant is pulled out of the vehicle. A particular danger was for children who were previously not wearing a seat belt were still in child seats.

The ban opponents pointed out that the impact of the vehicle, the rear-hinged doors not jumped even with warped body and the occupants could not be thrown from the vehicle. Another argument was that the front hinged doors could be opening if accidentally torn off by a signal coming from the rear vehicle, while a suicide door would then struck again.

There were producers who adjusted the door opening of the new legislation in current production: the Fiat Nuova 500 is an example of this. Early models have the door hinges, rear door handles and the front, in the later models from 1965 it was the reverse. Because the legislation banned the rear-hinged doors earlier, Fiat had obtained a dispensation for the last three years of production of the D model, which was marked with a special stamp in each vehicle title.

Today's edition of the operating permit is a safety feature that prevents the doors may be opened during navigation. In addition, this design is for vehicles with low speed, such as tractors, construction equipment, and the like still very common.

Renaissance rear -hinged doors

Currently, this door form experienced in the design as a portal doors a small renaissance, various automotive designers to experiment again with this stylistic device. First of all luxury cars are equipped with it. Thus, there have been in the fleet of the British royal family ( with vehicles from Daimler, Rolls- Royce and Bentley ) practically only Portaltüren vehicles (excluding all-terrain vehicle Range Rover ):

  • 2002 Bentley State Limousine, a constructed Bentley under VW leadership custom-made, were made by the only two pieces as an official vehicle for the British Queen. In the general range of Bentley this portal doors version, however, did not flow as a style element. The series vehicles from Bentley (and Maybach ) are equipped with normal doors.
  • Rolls- Royce model range since 2003: All models are equipped with the Rolls- Royce "coach doors" called portal doors that have been reintroduced under BMW's leadership after as early as 1959 to 1992, the hand-crafted RR models Phantom V VI equipped with rear doors had been. The Zweitürermodellen from 2003, the two doors are hinged at the rear.
