The Tanami Road, also Tanami Track or Track McGuire, is a highway in Australia's Northern Territory and northern Western Australia. It connects the Stuart Highway at Bond Springs north of Alice Springs southwest of Halls Creek to the Great Northern Highway.

Course

Northern Territory

In Bond Springs branches off the Tanami Road from Stuart Highway ( N87 ) to the west. It proceeds to west -north -west along the northern edge of the Western MacDonnell Ranges and then crosses the Tanamiwüste, from which it obtained its name, to the northwest. At Mount Tanami, 80 km before reaching the border into Western Australia, bends the slope to the west.

In the Northern Territory, the route takes in part of land that is now considered the aboriginal tribe of the Warlpiri. A transit permit ( " Permit" ) but is not needed. The only interruption to the otherwise monotonous route offer the service stations on Tilmouth Roadhouse and in Yuendumu.

Western Australia

After crossing the border of the Tanami Road runs north of the Lewis Range further 158 km to the west and then turns north of the Salt Lake Gregory Lake to the north.

Importance

The Tanami Road is 1014 km with the shortest connection between Alice Springs in central Australia and the Kimberleyregion.

Previously cattle from the region around the MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia to Halls Creek were driven into the Kimberleyregion on this track. Today, the road mainly from the supply transporters ( Road Trains) the mining company Newmont Mining will be used. This operates the The Granites Mine, about 550 km north- west of Alice Springs.

Road conditions and gas stations

The first 160 km from the junction of the Stuart Highway almost to TIMOUTh Roadhouse are paved and expanded two-track, then the road turns into a gravel road.

Stations are located at the TIMOUTh Roadhouse (km 166) and in Yuendumu ( 268 km ) in the Northern Territory, as well as in Billiluna (km 860) in Western Australia.
