The Roper Highway is a 298 km long highway in the north of Australia's Northern Territory. It combines Mataranka on the Stuart Highway with the city, in the south-east Arnhem Land settlement Ngukurr and Numbulwar, both former Aboriginal mission stations, on the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. From its inception on the Stuart Highway to the settlement of the Roper Roper Bar is part of the Savannah Way highway.

Course

The first paved road branches off to the south of Mataranka from the Sturt Highway ( N1) and runs south of the Elsey National Park to the east. He crossed the Strangways River runs through the south of the eponymous Roper River Aboriginesland ( Mangarrayi ) and reaches the station Roper Valley. After another 40 km of Teerbelag stops and at Roper Bar crossing the highway the Roper River and the Wilton River. 33 km further Ngukurr is reached.

The last stretch, only a dirt road leading through the Arnhem Land to east - northeast and may be used only with special permission from the authorities. It leads across the Numbulwar Road to Numbulwar on the Rose River estuary.

The highest point in the course of the highway is 164 m and the lowest at 12 m.
