History

The Merdicas / Mardicas were a tribe of Malay ethnic group from the island of Ternate in the Moluccas ( now part of Indonesia), at that time a small Spanish colony. Mardicas means as much as " people of the sea ". 1574 were originally seven families with the family name Nino Franco, De Leon, Ramos, De la Cruz, Esteubar, Pereira, and Nigoza voluntarily to Cavite to support the Spaniards in defending against the threat of pirate raids of the Chinese pirate Lin Feng. The feared attacks failed to materialize, however, and the Merdicas settled at a place in Cavite. This settlement site with the name Gilolo was initially after an indigenous tree, which was located in her home in the Moluccas, named. Later, the name was changed in Barra de Maragondon, now bears the name of the place Ternate. Even today, in Ternate Chabacano, a language spoken in the Philippines Spanish creoles used.

1663 received some Merdicas the arrangement of the Governor General of the Philippines located in Bagumbayan (now Ermita ) settle to defend Manila. Approximately 200 of them fought against Moro pirates.
