Thézillieu

Thézillieu is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Thézillieu is located on 870 m above sea level. M., 20 km east-southeast of the city Ambérieu -en- Bugey (air line). The farming village extends in the central Bugey, a slight increase on the eastern edge of a broad trough of the high Jura, which belongs to the Plateau d' Hauteville, between two wooded ridges at the foot of the signal.

The area of ​​26.25 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the southern French Jura. History

In 1149 the Cistercian monastery of Saint- Sulpice was transferred to the territory of today Thézillieu, which was called in Latin documents Theysiliacus. The monks cleared the area, made ​​it under cultivation, and thus laid the foundations for the colonization of the depression and the emergence of the village Thézillieu. The abbots were always the secular lords over Thézillieu, which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy since the Middle Ages. The Treaty of Lyon reached the village in 1601 to France.

Attractions

The village church of Thézillieu was built in the 17th century and later remodeled several times. From the former monastery, which was looted and destroyed in 1793, ruins of the church and convent buildings are preserved.

Population

With 321 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Thézillieu one of the small communities of the department of Ain. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century, a slight increase in population was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure
