Thomas Dufferin Pattullo

Thomas Dufferin ( " Duff " ) Pattullo ( born January 19, 1873 in Woodstock, Ontario, † March 30, 1956 in Victoria) was a Canadian politician and journalist. He was on 15 November, 1933 to December 9, 1941 Prime Minister of the Province of British Columbia as well as 1928-1941 Chairman of the British Columbia Liberal Party.

Biography

Pattullo worked in the 1890s in Ontario as a journalist, first at the Woodstock Sentinel, from 1896 as chief editor of the Galt Reformer. His father helped him to a location in the Yukon Territory, as Secretary of the Government Commissioner James Morrow Walsh. Pattullo remained until 1902 in Dawson City, then the capital of the territory, serving the government. He then worked as a Realtor and was for a short time at the City Council of Dawson City.

1908 moved Pattullo to Prince Rupert in British Columbia. There he was first in 1910, 1913 elected to the city council to the mayor. In November 1916, the election was followed in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. In the governments of Prime Minister Brewster, Oliver and MacLean, he was Minister for Rural Development. After the electoral defeat of the Liberals in July 1928 Pattullo was elected the new party leader and thus was opposition leader.

The ruling British Columbia Conservative Party could not cope with the social problems of the world economic crisis and disintegrated into several groups. On November 2, 1933, the Liberals won a landslide victory and took over Pattullo 15 November, the Office of the Prime Minister. During his tenure, he ran a partial social democratic policies, which often led to conflicts with the federal party and the federal government under William Lyon Mackenzie King.

In 1937 the government was confirmed, but in 1941 it was not possible the Liberals to gain a majority of seats. Pattullo refused to form a coalition government with the Conservatives, resigned on 9 December 1941 and resigned from the party. In the elections on 25 October 1945, he ran as Independent, but was deselected. Pattullo retired and spent his last years in Victoria.
