Timothy Detudamo

Timothy Detudamo (* in Uaboe, † April 1953 ) was a politician nauruischer. He was the father of Buraro Detudamo, the grandfather of the failed in the parliamentary elections in 2003 Robbie Detudamo and great-grandfather of tennis player Angelita Detudamo. He is considered the founder of modern Nauruan society. He was in his younger years as a pastor.

1917 Detudamo traveled with Philip Delaporte, where he helped many years in the creation of a Nauruan dictionary, in the United States to this continue to help with the translations of religious texts into Nauruan. To finance the trip, he needed U.S. $ 500 (at that time a lot of money ) which he received from collecting donations. Detudamo remained until 1921 in America, before returning to Nauru and became politically active. In 1928 he became head chief of Nauru until 1942.

Around 1940, he tried to make the Nauruan language for Europeans and Americans better understood. His reforms were not able to prevail only partly to do so is now resorted more to the old spelling. Nevertheless Detudamo is the most important language nauruischer politicians, he said, but a total of five languages: Nauruan, English, German, Marshallese and Kiribati.
