History

Formation and the rise of the House of Lords (1969-1979)

After the unexpected success of the Japanese national team during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, got the nationwide interest in football. To maintain the enthusiasm for the sport, the then president of the Japan Football Association Ken Nozu turned with Matsutaro Shorioki, in his chairman of the Yomiuri Giants, with a request to Yomiuri, to create their own professional club. Shorioku agreed and realized shortly before his death this plan.

Thus, founded in 1969, when Japan's football was dominated by work teams, the powerful publishing house Yomiuri, the next to the Yomiuri Shimbun ( the largest circulation newspaper in the world ) and various radio and TV stations already owned the highly successful baseball team Yomiuri Giants, the Yomiuri Football Club with in Kawasaki on the outskirts of Tokyo. The club started in the then fünftklassigen Tokyo Local League B, reached in 1971 already the Kantō Soccer League and played in 1972 for the first time the second class of the Japan Soccer League. After the establishment of the League, succeeded in 1978, the rise in the Division 1 and the first title in the Japan Soccer League Cup in 1979. Due to the dominance of the association gave the name Nippon FC (FC Japan) and was close to its peak flight.

Golden Era (1979-1994)

The aim of the club management was the establishment of the Yomiuri FC than one with a star-studded top team and a nationwide fan base - just as you would already held with the baseball team Yomiura Giants. Winning the title in 1983 followed by 1992 four more championships and three cup wins and to top the Asia Champions Cup in 1987, so Yomiuri ( later Yokohama Marinos ) was considered along with Nissan as the strongest team in the country.

With the establishment of the J. League Division 1 in the early 1990s, Yomiuri invested in the purchase of stars and entertained internationals like Kazuyoshi Miura, Ruy Ramos and Tsuyoshi Kitazawa. The club retained its supremacy and underlined this with the four consecutive titles: 1990/91 and 1991/92 as Yomiuri FC as well as 1993 and 1994 as Verdy Kawasaki in the J. League newly established. This was previously only in the 1960s, the works team of Toyo Industrial. The name change was due to the planned separation of the Association of Yomiuri, but remained until the takeover by Nippon Television Network ( broadcasting division Yomiuris ) in 1997 in its possession.

Lack of success and support (1995-2000)

Undoubtedly Verdy mid -1990s had reached the peak of his success, but even here it was found that did not work out the strategy of Yomiuri: The publisher had already made his Giants to the country's most popular baseball team and marketed the club through its newspapers and television stations successfully. But the strategy could not be at Verdy despite the sporting success repeat because the fans preferred rather small, rooted in their home regions clubs, as the japan -wide brand FC Nippon; which furthermore appeared with a mascot that is very reminiscent of a vulture.

As from 1996, the success has been slowly rare ( only winning the Emperor's Cup this year can be seen as a last gasp ) and turned away from the supporters club, Verdy broke away the financial foundation for success. The stars aging could not be replaced by expensive players, leaving only the seventh course was possible. As early as 1998 ended one season not only on second from bottom of the league, but also on the brink of financial ruin.

Fresh start in Tokyo (2001-2005)

The new beginning succeeded in 2001, after the club parted with almost all expensive Stars and Kawasaki - which has since been dominated by Kawasaki Frontale, Yokohama Marinos and Yokohama wing - left in the direction of Tokyo. With the move to Chofu, Tokyo renamed Tokyo Verdy 1969, which on the one hand, the new hometown of justice and the roots of the Yomiuri FC was is to keep alive. There could with economical use of foreign stars ( for example, the Brazilian Edmundo "o animal" or the Cameroonian Patrick M'Boma ) and talents from their own youth work a new fan base to be established. As an authorized plated club Verdy had to present themselves in the shadow of top dog FC Tokyo. Although the audience figures increased, but did not reach the level of the long to the top flight ascended in 2000, the city rivals.

Even sporty overtook the former FC Tokyo FC Nippon, which usually can keep one with difficulty in the J. League Division. Only on New Year's Day 2005 Verdy won the 2004 edition of the Emperor's Cup and so far its last title. Despite the success at the beginning of the season was 2005 the worst in club history. Partly because of three Victories opponent in July (July 2: 0:7 against Gamba Osaka, July 6th: 0:7 against Urawa Red Diamonds, July 17: 0:6 against Júbilo Iwata ) the club dismissed his Osvaldo Ardiles coach, under the Verdy conceded 23 goals in their last 5 games and has 9 games could not win in a row. On 26 July 2005 Verdy succeeded but an unexpected highlight in a disappointing season so far: as a table next to last defeated them in a friendly match Real Madrid sensational 3-0. But this was the only success of the season. On the 17th place in the table Verdy finished the season and climbed for the first time after 28 years in the House of Lords from.

Second League and new sponsorship (2006 to present)

Despite the decline Verdy played thanks to the Cup success in 2005 as a second division side in 2006 in Asia Champions Cup. Many experienced players had to be sold, so the club had to work with their own youth. It is worth mentioning Takayuki Morimoto, who was then 15 -year-old in 2004 as the youngest scorer in J. League history. The season was not satisfactory. All the more surprising the 5-0 win against Kusatsu on the opening day of the 2007 and the rise in the J. League Division 1 for the 2008 season as a table first. The addition in 1969 and was removed from the club name, the management remained intact.

September 17, 2009 NTV announced that it would repel his shares of the club and found a new Tokyo Verdy Holdings. Thus, the 40-year sponsorship of the Yomiuri / NTV ended for Verdy. Under the condition that Tokyo Verdy until November 16 finds a new sponsor, the league management explained agree with the decision - otherwise the club would lose admission to the 2010 season in the J. League.

In October 2010, Tokyo Verdy signed a five year contract with the retailer of sporting goods Xebio. Since then, the company's logo is on the jersey, the naming rights for two home games of the season are to her and the house sports brand " Ennerre " produces the sets of uniforms of the team.
