Tórshavnar Municipality

The Municipality of Tórshavn ( Faroese: Tórshavnar municipal ) is the largest Faroese community, both from the area and the population terms.

The municipality was founded in 1866. The city thus Tórshavn was officially made ​​the capital of the country.

In addition to the capital Tórshavn and the fused with her Argir places in the south and Hoyvík in the north, it comprises Norðradalur and Syðradalur in the west; Hvítanes, Sound, Kaldbaksbotnur, Kaldbak and Kollafjørður north on the east coast Streymoys; and the Danish military base Mjørkadalur in the mountains.

Since 1 January 2005 the municipality Tórshavn is summarized with the following municipalities: Hestur ( with Koltur ) Kirkjubøur ( with Velbastaður ) and Nólsoy.
