Lines

Due to the central interchange points Gare Cornavin, Stand, Bel-Air and Plain Palais ensures that any place can be reached by at most one transition in the tram network.

In the spring of 2014, the line is to be extended over 18 stand out to Carouge.

History

The history of the Geneva tram starts on June 19, 1862 with the opening of a horse tram between the Place Neuve and Carouge. In 1889 a steam tram vehicles followed with the French manufacturer Serpollet and 1894, the first electric tram. Finally in 1899 the Compagnie Genevoise the Tramways Électriques ( CGTE ) was established, the predecessor company of TPG. She sat down to unify the various systems, the target. All routes were electrified and uniformly converted to meter gauge. By 1923, a total of 120 line kilometers were built, which ranged into the countryside and partly to France.

1925 began, first convert the overland lines to bus operation. This process also continued in the city center, where the lines were partially replaced by trolleybuses. By 1969, the network shrank to an eight -kilometer tram route, which was served by the line 12 ( Moillesulaz - Carouge ). The good technical condition of the tram car and the fact that they had not been written off, led to the temporary retention of the last tram.

In the 1970s, the idea was raised as to the relatively large suburban municipalities Meyrin and Onex - to connect again to the remaining tram route - with a correspondingly modern light rail. All ideas and medium term investment necessary for the preservation of the remaining infrastructure, however, exceeded the ability of private CGTE. An amendment adopted in popular initiative demanded the nationalization of CGTE, so by January 1, 1977 from the CGTE the TPG were an independent director operation of the Canton of Geneva.

Renewals 1978-1992

The tracks of the last remaining tram line in 1978 renewed under the "new" TPG. The design of the proposed new lines was tackled, but led only on 12 June 1988 with the adoption of a new cantonal law on public transport to the first concrete construction projects manifested in larger network expansion in 1995.

However, the intrusive modernization of existing plant could be taken earlier attack. In Bachet -de- Pesay in the community Lancy of the new tram depot Bachet in 1984 with the construction started. To connect the new operating systems with the existing network, the route of the line was extended by one 12 miles from Carouge to Bachet on 27 September 1987. The stabling and maintenance facility in Bachet was opened in 1988, followed in 1990, the affiliated tram and railway building workshop in 1992 and finally the new administration building, which has since housed the headquarters of the TPG.

Based on the prototype Be 4/ 6741 of 1984 a total of 45 new, partially low-floor articulated trams were acquired from 1987 to 1989, which were supplied by Vevey Technologies in Villeneuve, in collaboration with Düwag BBC and ABB respectively. The colloquial name " DAV " for these vehicles is an acronym for Düwag - Ateliers de Vevey. With the new acquisition could be completely dispensed with the old tram trains, since the number of vehicles already the future network expansion were taken into account with the new lines 13 and 16.

Network expansion between 1995 and 2006

The precipitated in favor of the new projects vote in 1988 led to a first phase, in the center of the building of ring route Plain Palais- Carouge - Bachet - Palettes - Acacias -Plain Palais and the Rhônequerung to Geneva Cornavin Train Station, with continuation to the Place des Nations at Geneva UN seat stood.

On 28 May 1995 the line was opened 13 ( Cornavin - Bachet ) and the tram returned to the other side of the Rhone. On June 28, 1997, there was an extension of line 13 of Bachet after Palettes and in May 1998 took the line 16 ( Moillesulaz -Cornavin ) to operate on.

On 14 December 2003, the line was extended from 13 Cornavin according Nations. Line 15 was put into operation on 11 December 2004, to operate a new route from Lancy -Pont- Rouge via Acacias by Plain Palais and travels from there through the Cornavin train station Nations. Since 10 December 2005, the mentioned new section is also traversed by the line 17, which further upside from Plain Palais to Gare Eaux -Vives.

Due to the vehicle More needs by network expansions after 2000 more trams were ordered. Retrieve 2004-2005 were initially 21 City Runner ( " Flexity Outlook C ") from the house of Bombardier Transportation, with an option for another 17 vehicles were redeemed in late 2007.

Took place on 13 May 2006 with the commissioning of the section between Palettes and Lancy -Pont- Rouge, ring-closure, with the construction of the first phase could be completed. With the new section of the lines were 15 and 17 respectively extended by Palettes Bachet. Since then, the four trains running on the ring route trams drive on 12, 13, 15 and 17 no longer turning loops, but change to the specified " termini " the line number: between the lines 12 and 17, he changed the line number at the stop Bachet, between the lines 13 and 15 stop at the Palettes.

Since 2009, the line change takes place only between the lines 12 and 15 stop at the Palettes. Line 13 turns in the loop Palettes, line 17 in the loop Lancy -Pont- Rouge.

Expansion projects TCMC and TCOB between 2007 and 2011

The next phases of expansion project included the Tram Cornavin - Meyrin - CERN ( TCMC ), which was begun in early 2006 and the tram Cornavin - Onex - Bernex ( TCOB ), granted the concession for the Federal Council in January 2007.

The first part of the TCMC between Cornavin and Avanchet was opened on 8 December 2007 and was of the extended line 16 ( Moillesulaz - Avanchet ) and the new line 14 ( Bachet - Avanchet ) traveled. Also on the same date towards the line was extended from 17 Eaux -Vives train station to the disused railway station Chêne -Bourg, bringing the local short spur route, including turning loop is traversed in regular service after a long time.

Although the new TCMC - section of double track was built, making the lack of a reversing loop on the provisional endpoint Avanchet and the final termini Meyrin - CERN and Gravière as well as several stations with central platform the exclusive use of bidirectional vehicles on the lines in question is necessary. The rather scarce stock of this procured Cityrunner has led to the redemption of the existing options over 17 other vehicles while meanwhile, was waived the previously practiced by binding of the lines 12 and 16 at the terminus Moillesulaz.

The opening of the second stage ( Avanchet - Meyrin ) was due to various objections 12 December 2009 on the section to Meyrin ( Gravière ). On 30 April 2011, the company was incorporated on the section to CERN.

The TCOB route to Bernex P R, which includes, among other things, a second Rhônequerung the end of 2011 went into operation. The first - albeit very short - section between Coutance and Gare Cornavin has already taken the timetable change in December 2010. Since then wrong there, the new line 18, which was extended in May 2011 to CERN.

After the new line was opened to Bernex P R in operation, the numbering has been simplified. There were now only three tram lines 12, 14 and 15, the lines 13, 16, 17 and 18 were abandoned because now one way, only one line runs ( one line ( 14) but on two different but partially overlapping routes ). This should simplify the operation. However, this could not be achieved by all change trains haul branches all destinations in the city and in particular the Cornavin train station. After some confusion ( line 14 drove both to Meyrin Gravière, as well as to CERN ), the line number 18 was re-introduced and awarded the line between state and CERN; line 14 is traveling the route of Meyrin Gravière to Bernex. In the spring of 2014 also the line will be extended to 18 to Carouge sail up and down the small loop no longer at the terminus previous state.

Further plans

  • The TCOB - line will be extended from Bernex P R to Bernex -Ouest ( VAILLY P R). However, the commissioning is to be delayed until the end of 2017.
  • The TCMC - line will be extended from CERN to Saint -Genis -Pouilly, France. A start-up will be notified of the time horizon of 2016.
  • Further project studies deal with the extension of the tracks of Nations to Grand -Saconnex - primarily to Palexpo - and in a later stage further to Ferney -Voltaire in France.
  • The line 12 is to cross the national frontier and continued by Moillesulaz towards Annemasse. The detailed plans were designed to in September 2013. The 3.2 -kilometer route will run from the border of the municipalities and Gaillard Ambilly to the center of Annemasse. The terminal should be Lycée Glières. The travel time should be about 12 minutes. Construction expected to be completed end of 2013, with commissioning targeted for the end of 2016.
  • Finally, to a distance from the stop Trèfle Blanc at the line 12 are built to Saint -Julien -en- Genevois in France.
