History

The core area of the pre-colonial Emirate Trarza coincides approximately with the present administrative region. It consisted of a combination of several Bani Hassan tribes belonging to the Bidhans. In the 18th century, their influence extended further north along the coast to Arguin, in the north- east to the hill country of Adrar and the east to the Emirate of Brakna in the same administrative region today.

The income of the wealthy emirate has been achieved mainly through trade in gum arabic, which is harvested from Verek Acacia.
