United States Grand Prix West

The Grand Prix of the United States of America West ( also Grand Prix of Long Beach ) was a formula 1 race which was held between 1976 and 1983 eight times. Venue was the Long Beach Grand Prix Circuit in Long Beach, California.

History

The term U.S. West was chosen because the formula would deliver 1 two races on U.S. soil. 1976, the new street circuit in Long Beach, California was chosen as the venue. Just one year earlier was the Formula 5000 guests here. Since 1984, takes place annually from an IndyCar race under the name Grand Prix of Long Beach.

In 1980, there came into the 51st lap of the race to a serious crash that ended the careers and nearly the lives of Clay Regazzoni when he collided at about 280 km / h with a four -ton block of concrete. Regazzoni survived the strike seriously injured, however, was a paraplegic since this accident.
