Uruguayan general election, 1989

The presidential and parliamentary elections in Uruguay found in 1989 on Sunday, 26 November 1989.

From the concurrent government and parliamentary elections, the Partido Nacional emerged as the winner. In the elections, the electoral system was aligned so-called Lema system of relative majority, both the President and Vice President as well as the 99 deputies and 30 senators elected under a proportional representation for a term of five years.

The deputies mandates in the Chamber of Deputies thus divided as follows:

  • Partido Nacional (39 )
  • Partido Colorado ( 30)
  • Partido Frente Amplio (21 )
  • Partido por el Gobierno del Pueblo (9 )

The senate seats in the Cámara de Senadores thus divided as follows:

  • Partido Nacional (12 )
  • Partido Colorado ( 9)
  • Partido Frente Amplio ( 7)
  • Partido por el Gobierno del Pueblo ( 2)

Election result with respect to the parties

  • Eligible voters: 2,319,022
  • Voters: 2,056,355
  • Turnout: 88.67 %
