Ust-Omchug

Ust- Omtschug (Russian Усть - Омчуг ) is an urban-type settlement in Magadan Oblast (Russia) with 3914 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is situated in the south-eastern foothills of the Suntar - Chajata Mountains, which reaches a height of about 1800 m in the area, at the mouth of the left tributary Omtschug in the Kolyma Creek Detrin. From Oblastverwaltungszentrum Magadan Ust- Omtschug is about 180 km in a straight line in a northwesterly direction away.

Ust- Omtschug is the administrative center of the Rajons Tenkinski.

History

The village was founded since 1939 in connection with the development of gold and tin deposits in the area.

From 1949 to 1956 was in Ust- Omtschug the management of the Tenka - penal camp ( TenLag ) the Dalstroy management system of the Gulag with up to 18,000 prisoners who were employed in the mining and forestry.

1953, the status of an urban-type settlement was awarded, and the place administrative center of the newly created Rajons Tenkinski.

Economy and infrastructure

Ust- Omtschug is logistical center for the residents of the area mining companies (mainly gold, along with silver). Furthermore, forestry and agriculture for local needs to be operated.

The settlement is located on a regional road (the former Kolymatrakt ) branches off at a 180 kilometers away in neighboring Rajonverwaltungszentrum Palatka from the M56 highway and continues to the north- west, where it reaches more than 300 kilometers west of the M56 after Sussuman again.

Personalities

From 1949 to 1953, the German literary scholar Judge Trude lived during their exile in Ust- Omtschug.
