Valky

Walky (Ukrainian Валки; Russian Валки / Walki ) is a city in Ukraine and the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons the west of the Kharkiv Oblast with about 9,000 inhabitants ( 2013).

Geography

Walky is located on the banks of the river Mscha (Ukrainian Мжа ), a 77 km long tributary of the Donets. About the highway the Oblastzentrum Kharkiv 54 km north-east direction and Poltava can be reached southwestern direction in 91 km.

History

Established was the place in the year 1646. Place in April 1780 for the first time received the status of a city. In the meantime lost Walky again the municipal law, which received it in 1938 again. In the 19th century the city was the administrative center of Ujesd Walky in the government of Kharkov. 19 October 1941 to mid-September 1943, the city of troops of the Wehrmacht was occupied.
