The Vanoise massif ( often short even the Vanoise, French Massif de la Vanoise) is part of a mountain range in the French part of Graian that the French department of Savoy (French Savoie), Rhône-Alpes region. The mountain range extends 52 km north-south and 56 km east-west over an area of 1828 km ².

The largest part of the mountain range - from a height of 685 m and with the exception of the ski areas above the Isère valley (Val d'Isere, Tignes, La Plagne, Les Arcs ) and the north-west Trois Vallées ( Méribel, Courchevel and Val Thorens / Les Menuires ) - is set in the context of the Parc National de la Vanoise under protection. In the north it is from the upper reaches of the Isère ( Tarentaise), bounded on the south by the valley of the Arc (Maurienne ). Because of the shape which gives it these river valleys, the massif also " la poule " is called ( the chicken ). The French term for the inhabitants of the region is Vanoisiens.

The massif is a part of the crystalline central zone of the Western Alps and has an approximately circular boundary, which differentiates it from more distinct mountain ranges of the region. The highest peak is the Grande Casse ( 3855 m), and about 40 more are among the three thousand. Particularly noteworthy were the northern corner of Mont Pourri and occupying the south over the Maurienne standing Dent Parrachée and of course the roof of the massive glaciers Glaciers de la Vanoise mountains bearing (eg Dôme de Chasseforêt ). In particular, the National Park protects these important glaciers, significant both in number and in size, before skitouristischer development.

The southeastern edge of the Vanoise, where the 2,083 m high pass of the Col du Mont -Cenis forms the border, lies west of the Italian city of Turin, just 60 km away. The surrounding mountain ranges are: the west, the Belle Donne, in the north of the Massif de Beaufort and parts of Mont Blanc, in the east of the mountain region of Aosta Valley and to the south the Cottian Alps and the Pelvoux massif.
