Vegard Opaas

Vegard Opaas ( born January 11, 1962 in Oslo ) is a former Norwegian ski jumper.

Career

He played his first World Cup event on January 27, 1982 in St. Moritz and immediately reached the tenth. Throughout the 1980s Opaas often reached top placings, but had to concede defeat Matti Nykänen and Jens mostly Weißflog. His first of seven World Cup victories he achieved on 11 December 1983 in Thunder Bay. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, he reached the eighth place on the normal hill.

The most successful season was for Opaas the winter of 1986 / 87th In the Nordic World Ski Championships ( the only one in which he took part in his career ), he won silver in the normal hill and in the team competition, also bronze on the large hill. He also won the overall World Cup for the only time in his career and stood in ski flying in Planica with 193 meters wide in the meantime a new world record. The Pole Piotr Fijas reached shortly afterwards but 194 meters.

After the winter 1989/90 Opaas ended his career.
