Viacha Municipality

The municipality Viacha is a district in the department of La Paz in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location in near space

The municipality Viacha is one of seven Municipalities of the province Ingavi and lies in the eastern part of the province. It is bordered to the north and northwest of the province of Los Andes and to the municipality Taraco, on the southwest by the municipality of Jesús de Machaca and the province Pacajes, on the southeast by the provincial flavor, and to the east by the province of Murillo.

The municipality has 311 localities ( Localidades ), the central location of the municipality is Viacha with 29 108 inhabitants in the northern part of the municipality. The only significant town in the municipality of Villa Remedios is next Viacha with 673 inhabitants. (2001)

Geography

The municipality Viacha is on an average height of 3900 m southeast of Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera Central in the west to the east.

The mean average temperature of the region is located at 9 ° C, the annual precipitation is 500-600 mm (see climate chart Viacha ). The region has a pronounced diurnal climate, the monthly average temperatures vary only slightly between 7 ° C in July and 11 ° C in December. the monthly rainfall range from less than 10 mm during the months of June and July and close to 100 mm from December to February.

Population

The municipality has an area of 845 km ² and a population density of 34.4 inhabitants / km ² ( 2001).

The life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was 63.8 years, the infant mortality rate is 7.6 per cent ( 1992) declined to 5.7 percent in 2001.

The literacy rate for those over 19 years is 83.4 percent, and that 94.3 percent of men and 73.3 percent for women ( 2001).

87.1 percent of the population speak Spanish, 70.8 percent speak Aymara, Quechua and 1.3 percent. (2001)

47.3 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 48.6 percent have no sanitary facilities ( 2001).

73.8 percent of the total of 12,793 households have a radio, 41.9 percent have a television, 42.7 percent a bicycle, a motorcycle 0.7 percent, 5.8 percent, a car, a refrigerator 6.6 percent, and 9, 5 percent a telephone. (2001)
