Vikhorevka

Wichorewka (Russian Вихоревка ) is a city in Irkutsk Oblast (Russia) with 22,520 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the central part of the Angararückens, 35 km southwest of Bratsk and about 900 km north- west of the Oblasthauptstadt Irkutsk, on the river Wichorewa, a left tributary of the Angara.

The city is part of the Wichorewka Rajon Bratsk.

Wichorewka is a major railway station on the Baikal - Amur Mainline ( kilometer 269 from Taischet ).

History

The town was founded in 1957 in connection with the construction of the West section Taischet - Ust- Kut (Lena ) of the later Baikal - Amur Mainline (BAM ) as a workers' settlement at the same station. It was named after the river Wichorewa, which takes its name again to commemorate the Strelets - Sotnik ( hundred leaders ) Wichor Sawin received, which arrived in the area in 1630 during clashes with Evenki killed.
