Alzamay

Alsamai (Russian Алзамай ) is a small town in Irkutsk Oblast (Russia) with 6730 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the northern foothills of Sayan, about 600 km north-west of Irkutsk Oblasthauptstadt the river Toporok, a right tributary of the Birjussa in the basin of the Angara.

The city belongs to Rajon Nischneudinsk whose administrative center is located 75 km south-southeast Nischneudinsk.

Alsamai is located on the Trans-Siberian Railway ( 4586 line kilometers from Moscow) and on the highway M53 Novosibirsk - Irkutsk - Listvyanka.

History

Alsamai was written in 1899 with the opening of the station, is on the East Siberian section of the Trans-Siberian railway near an older village of the same name (now Stary Alsamai, Alt- Alsamai ). Name of the place and of the river Alsamaitschik may be derived from the name of the legendary heroes of the 16th century Buryat Olsobe or Olsoma, populated under the Buryats from the territory of present-day Mongolia from the Baikal area.
