Vila Real de Santo António is a municipality and town in the district of Faro in Portugal.

History

Sooner was the fishing village of Santo Antonio de Avenilha, which was completely destroyed in the 17th century by an earthquake in the broad estuary of the Guadiana. 1774 was at this point the Marquês de Pombal, built at the time Prime Minister of King José I in just five months, a new city: Vila Real - the Royal City. In order not to let the original place forgotten, the Marquês chose the name " Vila Real de Santo Antonio " for the city.

With the rapid and operated with high hardness build the city of the Marquês pursued in particular strategic purposes. The earthquake of 1755 had in fact border towns such as Castro Marim to Spain and cacela Velha destroyed, it was urgent against the arch-enemy of Spain to show "Flag ". Experience with the fast reconstruction of a city had collected the Marquês in Lisbon. There was after the 1755 earthquake under his direction that completely destroyed the Undercity, the Pombaline, rebuilt, after the pattern of a chessboard. All roads lead right angles to each other, the houses have a consistent style. Exactly according to these specifications Vila Real was applied, and even finished parts were shipped to Lisbon Vila Real because of the rush.

The Marquês de Pombal (1699-1782), an advanced for its time Minister with extensive powers wanted, but also domestically enforce the founding of the city of his ideas. To bring trade and economy according to his plans to " swing ", he founded a fishing company and subsidized shipbuilding. With little enthusiasm among the population there has been only the imposition of the duty. The forced relocation of all places did not always succeed. The fishermen of Monte Gordo persistently refused and gave way to Spain from. The new residents came from Aveiro in northern Portugal (where they could because of a natural disaster no longer live ) and from other places in the Algarve.

To be continued with the place, about the chroniclers are unanimous. It is certain that the Marquês de Pombal fell out of favor after the death of his employer King José I ( he had created with the Jesuits and the minor nobility and wanted to abolish their privileges ), and was released in 1777. Then, according to most sources to be once forgotten the city. Only about one hundred years later, it was "revived " and until the 1960s base for the tuna fishery and the sardine. The port is still important for the export of ores. Other sources in 1777, several thousand people already said to have lived here. It is more likely that the recovery came to a railway line and construction of fish factories only to the port.
