Volgodonsk

Wolgodonsk (Russian Волгодонск ) is a large city with 170 841 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in Russia in Rostov Oblast.

Geography

The city is located in the Don region, in the Rostov region, about 1,000 km south of Moscow and about 190 km east of the regional capital Rostov-on- Don. There she is on the Don, the Volga - Don Canal and thereby the dam of the reservoir Zimljansker.

History

Wolgodonsk (literally, " Volga-Don city ") was created in 1950 as a housing estate in the construction of the Volga-Don canal and received city rights in 1956.
