General

The design of the 1979 developed and offered in Brazil from 1981 VW Gol comes from the VW Polo designer Dipl. -Ing. Phillip Schmidt. He drew a mixture of polo and golf. Conceptually, the Gol is closely related to the Volkswagen prototype EA 276 of 1969, a failed design of a successor to the Beetle. As the EA 276 it has an air-cooled engine and front wheel drive. The Gol - motor is therefore mounted longitudinally as in the first Passat, not across as Polo and Golf. In Brazil and other South American countries replaced the VW Gol Brasília.

Model history

Generation I ( BX )

The first generation of the VW Gol was manufactured from 1981 to 1996. The car is a smorgasbord of technical components of VW and Audi, the underbody of the Audi 80 B1 combined with the air-cooled 1285 cc boxer engine from the VW Beetle, but rotated by 180 ° and fitted forwards. The shape of the body consisted of a mix of elements of the Golf I and the Polo I (Type 86). Due to the weak performance, the Gol initially sold poorly, so in 1981 the drive has already been replaced by another air-cooled 1.6 - liter engine with dual carburetors.

Generation II (type AB9 )

The second generation of the VW Gol is produced since 1994. The wheelbase has been increased by 11 cm. All engine variants of the Generation II injection. The body is compared to the original version rounded and bears the nickname in Brazil bolinha ( balls).

Generation III (type NF)

On 1 July 2008, the third generation of the Gol was presented. Due to the importance of the model for the Brazilian market and Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was invited to the presentation. The choices are initially two 1,0 - and 1,6- liter petrol engines with 53 or 74 kW. Engines with the " Total Flex " technology will be equipped for the Brazilian market, which allows to operate on gasoline, ethanol or a mixture of both. For other countries, there is only pure gasoline drive.

Body shapes

The Gol was during the time of a simple three-door small car at the starting point of a family of models, the models but not all carry the name Gol, he himself will be built as three - and five-door hatchback since 1998 as a sedan.

Saveiro

In pickup version of the Gol has been produced since 1983 and sold as Saveiro. In other Latin American countries, ie the vehicle Gol Pick Up.

Voyage

The Voyage was the notchback version of the VW Gol, whose design was reminiscent of the VW Jetta I. However, the body had a unique appearance. The 2-door version was produced from 1981 to 1996. In a 4-door variant, there was the Voyage from 1983 to 1986 and again from 1990 until production ceased in 1996. Overall, some 850,000 examples were built.

From 1986 to 1993 the vehicle was with water-cooled 1.8 -liter in-line engine carburetor exported under the name VW Fox with 66 kW in the U.S., but never made it to the European market, where the demand for small notchback sedans rapidly declined.

Volkswagen Argentina produced the VW Voyage 1983 to 1991 under the name Gacel from 1991 to 1997 Senda. In other Latin American countries it was sold as an Amazon.

The New Voyage

The Voyage witnessed the launch of the Gol G5 2008 revival. The newly developed vehicle based, like its predecessors, on the Gol platform. It is intended mainly for the South American market but also exported to the Middle East. Thus, Volkswagen is offering for these markets again a notchback model, which are in high demand because of the climate.
