Volkswagen Lupo

The Lupo was the first European micro car model series of the Volkswagen group, virtually identical to the Seat Arosa, which came on the market in 1997. The Lupo was followed until the fall of 1998, although in 1991 showed VW with the VW Chico interest in participating in the mini car segment. The vehicle was available only three doors and is available with either four or five seats. It has a very small trunk, but can be considerably enlarged by folding down the rear bench.

The Lupo was built in Wolfsburg until mid-2001, after which production was ( with the exception of the 3L Lupo ) relocated to the VW plant in Brussels.

The market success of the series was relatively low. After initial good sales, the market collapsed markedly. Reason could be the relatively high price and the limited use by the small trunk and the close relationships in the rear.

In mid-2005 the production of the VW Lupo and Seat Arosa was the set up on the 3L and the GTI versions. The production of the last two models were discontinued at the end of 2005. The market segment of the Lupo was only re-occupied by Volkswagen which is built in Brazil VW Fox. The Fox - variants for the Brazilian and Mexican markets are offered there under the name Lupo.

Lupo is the Italian word for wolf, and is an allusion to the main plant in Wolfsburg.

Motors

Initially, only the naturally aspirated and 37 (50 ) were - and 55 (75 ) kW (PS) petrol engine. 1999, the two TDI and the rather rare Lupo 16V came with the 74 (101 ) kW (PS ) erstarktem 1.4 - liter four-cylinder and its centrally located tailpipe on the market. The gap between the two smallest engines filled starting in 2000, 44 (60 ) kW (PS ) version of the 1.4-liter petrol engine.

In the same year, also followed the below-described Lupo GTI and the 77 (105 ) kW ( hp) FSI, which was delivered to the body of the 3L Lupo. The FSI was the only variant that was not produced until 2005. In 2003 its production started again. The offered OHV 1.0 -liter engine was derived from the 1.3-liter Škoda Felicia / Favorit engine, thus it is the same engine that was used in the last years of Škoda 130 as a rear engine.

Specifications

Lupo 3L TDI

The Lupo 3L TDI (Type 6E) appeared in 1999 and is a the combined cycle fuel consumption of 2.99 liters of diesel per 100 km as the first full-fledged mass-produced 3- liter car in the world. It has a 3-cylinder in-line engine with pump -nozzle system and a drag coefficient of 0.29.

In addition to the development of a fuel-efficient engine was put on light construction techniques. These include the use of lightweight materials magnesium and aluminum and the associated development of new components. In addition, the disks of the Lupo made of thinner glass. So could be saved compared with the VW Lupo SDI 150 kg weight.

The aerodynamics of the rear hatch has been optimized. For additional weight savings, the glass thickness of the rear window was reduced and made the tailgate in composite technology: It consists of aluminum exterior and interior made of magnesium. This weight reduction led, in conjunction with the prescribed to use the tax benefits of energy -saving tires, to problems in driving behavior: in particular, the only loaded a driver vehicle showed a strong tendency to oversteer. In order to maintain the already developed aluminum -magnesium tailgate and the already existing production, lead weights were installed as an interim solution in the rear bumper. This composite flap was only fitted to May 2001, from the 2002 model year, the steel tailgate of the 'normal' Lupo was installed. For the 2001 model year ( from 06/ 2000) the starter battery was installed in the spare wheel well in the trunk to the rear wheels to charge more. With this measure, one of the 7 kg extra weight could be eliminated. Also eliminated the possibility of replacing the standard production repair kits to order a spare wheel. Together with the battery and the heavier tailgate then could account for both weights. The on-board electronics is powered by a mounted between the rear wheel arches and drivers door boost converter with constant 14 volts when the starter can break the on-board voltage.

Hood and doors were still made of aluminum. An automatic gearbox ensures early upshift and thus low speeds. The gear unit is designed translated very long. Technically, it is a special solution: A conventional transmission and a clutch are actuated by a hydraulic system. The replacement of such a transmission is relatively expensive.

Due to the limited functionality ( three-door, small trunk, a little space in the rear ), the high purchase price and the resulting long payback time the VW Lupo 3L TDI has opened up no broader group of buyers. Critics insinuate VW that this model policy hinted at an alibi project.

With emissions of 81 grams of CO2 per kilometer, the VW Lupo 3L met since its introduction, the criteria for classification as a tax three-liter car in Germany ( max. 90 g CO2/km). He was also the first diesel-powered passenger cars, which reached 4 exhaust emission standard Euro. Older VW Lupo 3L models reached the Euro 3 emission standard. The extension of the start -stop system from free running (rolling with the clutch disengaged ) contributes to fuel savings and hence to cut emissions.

After the end of the other series Lupomodelle the 3L (like the GTI ) continued to be built until the early summer of 2005. As of May 2005, he was no longer available. A diesel particulate filter was never offered by Volkswagen for the Lupo 3L, even with an extra or as a retrofittable kit, a green sticker is also assigned to the vehicle without a filter.

Lupo GTI

The Lupo GTI was produced until 2002, first at the main factory in Wolfsburg and from 2003 in Brussels, Belgium, due to the rather low demand and the new entry-level model Fox production was stopped.

The 1.6 -liter 16V engine ( equipped with an intake cam adjustment) with standard six-speed gearbox ( from 2001 ) and front-wheel drive with an output of 92 kW ( 125 hp ) at 6500 rpm and a torque of 152 Newton meters at 3000 / min required 8.2 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour, the maximum speed is 205 km / h The manufacturer stated an average fuel consumption of 7.3 liters of Super Plus ( 98 octane ) to 100 km. The engine complies with the Euro 4 emissions standard.

The screwed fenders, doors and the bonnet are made of aluminum. The battery is installed, for reasons of weight distribution in the rear, a spare tire is not provided.

The vehicle has been lowered by 20 millimeters, has flared fenders, side skirts, tire size 205 /45 R 15 V, a dual tailpipe exhaust in the middle and an enlarged rear spoiler. Inside, it features sports seats with red stitching, red seatbelts, aluminum pedals, tilt steering wheel, instrument cluster with chrome rings and chrome hands and outside temperature display. Steering wheel, shift boot and hand brake levers are made of leather. The headliner, the grab handles and sun visors are different than the standard black model. Standard bi-xenon headlights and Bosch "Aero Twin" wipers are installed.

For active safety disc brakes provide front and rear side airbags, ABS, ASR and ESP. Could be ordered, the Lupo GTI in black exterior paint finishes, Tornado / Flash Red, ravenna blue / laser blue, reflex silver / silver moon and blue- anthracite. The exact color code in the colors red, blue and silver was dependent on the model year.

VW Lupo (Mexico)

In Mexico, the Brazilian VW Fox, which replaced the Lupo in Europe end of April 2005, sold with 1.6-liter petrol engine as a three - and five-door version under the name Lupo.

Chassis numbers

The chassis numbers are internationally standardized and are established for each model year. The serial numbers start at VW for each model year basically with 000001 and are assigned consecutively during the production of pre-production and production vehicles. The highest chassis number for each model year is therefore also the number of manufactured in this model year pre-production and production vehicles.

Sometimes it happens in exceptional cases that pre-production, were awarded for the already running numbers were reported for manufacturing or quality reasons, not finished. In addition, pre-production vehicles are not sold as new vehicles.

The production periods of the VW model years are not identical with the calendar year. The Lupo was originally developed with the vehicle class 6X and type-tested. After production of 121 pre-production vehicles this vehicle class as model year 1998 began at the Wolfsburg plant mass production for the model year 1999. With the 2002 model year, the production of the 6X series was relocated to the factory Brussels.

The development of the Lupo 3 Liter with a lightweight body was carried as a separate class of vehicle 6E. The first zero series vehicles of this class were produced as a 1999 model year and the first production vehicles as of model year 2000. Since the lightweight body was used in a modified form for GTI FSI and these vehicles of category 6E are assigned.
