Voray -sur- l'Ognon is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Voray -sur- l'Ognon situated at an altitude of 222 m above sea level, about 11 km north of the city of Besançon (air line). The village extends to the south of the department in the valley of the Ognon, on the north bank of the river, north of the ridge of the Fort de la Dame Blanche ( Grande Cote ).

The area of ​​6.90 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Ognon Valley. The southern boundary runs partly along the Ognon, partly south of the river. This flows here with several turns west through a flat area, which has a width of about two kilometers and is on average 220 ​​m. From the river, the municipality's area extends north across the valley to the adjacent plateau, to the east by the valley of Buthiers (inflow of Ognon ) is flanked. With a narrow corner of the area extends to a wooded ridge, which extends in a north-south direction. It consists of an alternation of calcareous and sandy- marly layers of the upper Jurassic period. With 327 meters, the highest elevation of Voray -sur- l'Ognon is achieved in the Forêt de Sorans.

History

Since time immemorial, was located at today's Voray a crossing of the Ognon. In Roman times the place was called Voracus. In the Middle Ages Voray belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. It formed its own dominion, and was the provost of Châtillon -le- Duc ( in the department of Doubs) dependent. The monastery of Saint -Vincent, Besançon also had rights over Voray. To the church and the castle was built a small castle town, which controlled the river crossing. Together with the Franche -Comté Voray came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. A major fire destroyed in June 1731, large parts of the patch. In 1962 Voray was officially renamed Voray -sur- l'Ognon, thus a better distinction to homophonic community Vorey was possible. Today Voray -sur- l'Ognon is a member of the 28 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais.

Attractions

The present church of Voray -sur- l'Ognon was built in 1776-1779 by the architect Nicole and is classified as a monument historique. The internal design is one of a wealth of furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. From the early 17th century, the chapel of Notre -Dame de Pitié comes. In the old town several houses from the 16th to 18th centuries have been preserved, showing the traditional style of the Haute -Saône. The old stone bridge over the Ognon was built in 1765.

Population

With 797 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Voray -sur- l'Ognon one of the smaller towns in the Haute- Saône.
