Wanhua District

Wanhua (Chinese万 华 区, pinyin Wanhua Qū, W.-G. Wan -hua Chu, PEH oē - jī Bang - kah - khu ) is the name of an ancient settlement in Taipei. The area is incorporated and today forms an independent municipality.

In addition, there were Wanhua off Taiwan Japanese colonial period, two further settlements in what is now Taipei: Da- Long - Don and Da Dao Chen.

Originally, the city bore the name Mengjia (Chinese艋舺, Pinyin Měngjiǎ ) or in Taiwanese Bang - kah, which means canoe (cf. Tagalog and Indonesian bangka ). Canoe, because the aboriginal and Han Chinese in Bang - kah on the Danshui River in their canoes traded with. From Bang - kah was in the period of Japanese rule Manka, written万 华. These Japanese kanji are in turn expressed in standard Chinese as Wanhua.

Wanhua is the oldest settlement in Taipei. A common phrase in Taiwan is " First, Fu, Lu, secondly, thirdly Mengjia ". "Fu" is Tainan Fu, the first capital of Taiwan, " Lu " is Lugang, the great commercial port in Central Taiwan; and " Mengjia " is a major trading port in northern Taiwan. From this phrase is seen as rich and important Mengjia once was.

In Wanhua is the Mengjia Longshan Temple.
