The community is located west of the promontory.

Weilerswist located on Erft and Swist. From the origin of this word " hamlet on the Swist " is therefore the correct hyphenation Wei | ler | Swist, not Wei | Jewellers | wist.

Community structure

The municipality consists of six statistical villages with a total of 15 districts.

History

The municipality was created Weilerswist 1 July 1969 by the Act on Restructuring of the district Euskirchen, through which the communities Lommersum Metternich, Müggenhausen, Crushing and Weilerswist the Office Weilerswist Lommersum merged to form community Weilerswist.

For centuries people in the fertile beading around Erft and Swist found sufficient food and settled there. Thus, there are traces of settlement of the people of the Upper Paleolithic, the Linear Pottery culture, the urnfield people and settlements from the La Tène period.

Celts and Germans, but mainly Romans left their mark. Numerous settlements and isolated farms ( Villae Rusticae ) passed, refer to the location names like Hamlet, destruction and Metternich and occupy foundations found during excavations, artifacts, row tombs and sarcophagi. A cult center was located on the Swister mountain. In the year 1933 conducted by Peter Anton Tholen excavations the remains of a larger temple district were discovered. There matrons were worshiped, but also the goddess Diana had been set a consecration stone. Also was there on the high road leading from the castle to the fort Bonn Neuss on the mountain Swister a Jupiter column whose upper part was also found.

When the Franks took over the area, new settlements were established. Villages such as Lommersum ( Lommundesheim ) Derkum ( Dedinchheim ), floor home, Ottenheim and Schneppenheim that end in " home ", refer to a foundation by a Frankish tribe leader.

Since Carolingian documents are handed down from places in the municipality of Weilerswist. The first mention of the place Weilerswist as " Wilrezwist " dates of July 9, 1310.

The rule Weilerswist, which had been pledged in 1303 by Dietrich Luf of Cleves, and his wife Lisa at the Cologne archbishop Wikbold of Holte, came after a failure to cashing in the possession of the Archbishopric of Cologne.

Weilerswist belonged to the Electoral Cologne office Brühl, but had its own court without high court rights. These were exercised by the court Brühl. Within the district court Weilerswist several farm organizations were with Hofgerichten. It was the the pin Sankt Andreas in Cologne in Oberswist, pin Sankt Gereon in Cologne in Swist and the house cooling harrows, which included the Kaulenhofesverband. The high court rights, both Sankt Gereon and house possessed cooling harrows, were lost over the centuries. In the 17th century possessed the sovereign, the Elector of Cologne, all the high- court rights in Weilerswist. This legal situation remained unchanged until the reorganization of the areas with the administrative and judicial reform under French rule in 1798.

Lommersum belonged to the rule Kerpen Lommersum and was adopted by Schaesberg in 1710 by Count Friedrich.

In the creation of new administrative districts according to the French model under Napoleon in 1800 Weilerswist and Lommersum mairies were in Canton Lechenich. With the secularization of Church property in 1802 and carried out in the years to sell the ownership in Weilerswist and Lommersum fundamentally changed.

The mairies remained in the Prussian era when mayors and since 1927 as offices even after the establishment of the State of North Rhine -Westphalia exist in 1946. 1951 was the Office Weilerswist Lommersum, which existed until 1969.

Church relationships

The Catholic parish church is dedicated to St. Mauritius. It was first mentioned in the Liber Valoris 1308. The destroyed in the great fire in the village in 1757 and then broken church was replaced by a new building, the tower was completed in 1772 1771. The baroque curly eight-sided dome with a closed lantern and scalloped dome umbrella that carries high baluster ball and cross, is a characteristic feature of Weilerswist.

In the years 1938/39, was an extension of the church, 1964/65 a thorough renovation and another in 1996. Originally Baroque interior, which had been replaced by a late 19th century neo-Gothic, was removed in 1964 and the church was again a baroque interior. The present organ was manufactured in the organ workshop Johannes Klais organ building in Bonn. It replaces the organ from the former Franciscan monastery in Lechenich, which was given to the Church of St. Mary of the Angels in Brühl.

Another church is the Protestant Martin Luther Church. Until the Second World War only a few Protestant Christians lived in Weilerswist. Only after 1945, the number increased by expellees. They were first to the parish Brühl, after 1948 the church congregation Liblar. In 1967, the municipality Weilerswist own church and in 1973 its own pastor.

The Swister tower on the mountain Swister is the tower of a former parish and pilgrimage church of the village Swist or Niederswist. The church, which was dedicated to the Holy Virgins Fides, Spes and Caritas, was built according to studies of the foundation walls, whose stones were associated with lime mortar, by Peter Anton Tholen in the Carolingian period. The 8 m long and 10 m wide building with an initial charge of the choir had only 50 cm wide walls, resulting Tholen closed on a covered with wood construction. The three-storey tower, the mortars from the difference of the Church, Tholen dated to the 11th/12th. Century. Thus, the assumption Clemens was confirmed by the age of the tower. It is assumed that along with the tower a stone church was built, which was named in 1308 in Liber Valoris as a parish church. The heavily damaged in the Sewer War church was not subsequently restored. After she lost her status as a parish church, it remained Sanctuary until the 19th century. 1829, the church was demolished, leaving only the tower standing, of 1853 a new roof and inside a small chapel was, could take place in the church. After 2002, the tower was Swister passes from the civil parish in the possession of the Catholic Church in Weilerswist, the Association of preservation and conservation of Swister tower was founded Swister tower supports.
