Weissenbach an der Enns is a market town with 496 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the judicial district or Liezen in Styria. On January 1, 2015, is joined in the Styrian municipality structural reform with the market town of St. Gallen, the new community will continue to bear the name of St. Gallen.

Geography

Weissenbach an der Enns is situated in the natural park Eisenwurzen in Liezen district in the Austrian state of Styria.

History

Weissenbach an der Enns is mentioned for the first time in documents in the 12th century. On 9 January 1277 King Rudolf I gave permission for the construction of a bridge over the Enns, which was built in the same place where today's Enns bridge is located. In past centuries, this bridge was destroyed several times by floods and rebuilt again and again.

Three economic activities were mainly in which the residents of Weissbach and environment found work and bread. The iron industry with some hammer mills, connected with the rafting ennsabwärts and the production of salt. In the 13th century, the first iron hammer site is mentioned.

The abolition of the manorial system was carried out in 1848., The local church as an autonomous body was established in 1850. After the annexation of Austria in 1938 the congregation to Reichsgau Styria came from 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

With the closure of the pulp mill in 1980, the number of inhabitants had been working, there was a significant decline in population.

Coat of arms

The award of the municipality coat of arms was made with effect from 1 June 1977. Coat Description: In the red shield with a silver left oblique wave beams, accompanied by a silver top right, inward-turning counter- paper roll, the bottom left of a silver Grandel with eight silver Örteln.

In Weissbach there is a kindergarten, a primary school, a secondary school and a music school.
