Wesfarmers is one of Australia's largest public companies. The Group is a conglomerate of various industries such as fertilizer production, coal mining, chemicals, gas, power, construction material production, insurance and more.
The company was founded in 1914 as an agricultural cooperative. 1984, the company went to the Australian Stock Exchange. The company developed very well during this time and was able between 1994 and 2003 achieve a total shareholder return of about 29 percent, the second highest value of the Australian Stock Exchange. In 2000 the company purchased the coal mining companies Curragh for 120 million U.S. dollars. The following year, the Howard Smith Group was bought for 2.7 billion U.S. dollars and their companies, Blackwoods, Bakers, Atkins, Motion Industries, Mullings Fasteners, Protector Alsafe, NZ Safety, Protector Safety Supply and Packaging House incorporated in Wesfarmers. In November 2007, Wesfarmers took over the Coles Group for 19.3 billion AUD. The number of employees increased by this acquisition of about 30,000 to nearly 200,000.
June 30, 2006 Wesfarmers had a market capitalization of $ 13.4 billion and 150,000 shareholders in the fiscal year, which ends on June 30 of 2004, the company had a turnover of 8.407 billion AUD and a profit after tax ( net income ) 650 million. 2007, prior to the Coles Group takeover, the company had revenue 9.8 billion and 786 million profit after tax. 2008, sales rose to 33.6 billion AUD which to a net income of 1.050 billion AUD led. By 2012, profits doubled to 2.126 billion on revenue of AUD 58.1 billion AUD
