William Theopilus Jones

Theopilus William Jones ( born February 20, 1842 in Corydon, Harrison County, Indiana; † October 9, 1882 ) was an American politician. Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the Wyoming Territory as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years

After leaving school, William Jones studied law and after his admission to the bar he began to work in his new career in 1865 in his hometown of Corydon. Previously he had participated in the Civil War as a soldier of the Union. At war's end he had reached the rank of Major.

Political career

William Jones was a member of the Republican Party. In 1869 he was appointed as a judge to the Supreme Court of Wyoming Territory. To this end, he moved to Cheyenne. In the congressional elections of 1870 he was able to prevail against the previous Congress delegates Stephen Friel Nuckolls and move into the House of Representatives in Washington. There he represented between 4 March 1871, and March 3, 1873, the interests of its territory. In the following congressional elections of 1872 he was defeated by William Randolph Steele, the candidate of the Democratic Party.

After the end of his service in the federal capital, William Jones withdrew from politics. He returned to Corydon, where he worked as a lawyer. There he died in 1882 at the age of 40 years.
