Opening data

The range was from 1852 to 1854 in three stages, starting from Bamberg, built; the concession was granted by the Bavarian Law of 23 May 1846

In the further development of the route several times capacity expansions made necessary by increased traffic:

In addition, the introduction of the new Würzburg's train station was opened after the old Ludwig station in the city center to the increased traffic could no longer deal and had been a day earlier, on June 30, shut down on July 1, 1864.

Traffic

Before the completion of the direct route Rottendorf - Kitzingen - Dietersheim - Fürth, which was initially not realized because of its difficult terrain conditions in the region of the Steigerwald, the eastern part of the Ludwig - west railway had a great importance in the East-West Highway. Having the direct Nuremberg - Würzburg railway in 1865 but was then built, the importance of the route was Würzburg - Bamberg henceforth mainly in regional and local transport. On July 1, 1886, between Würzburg and Rottendorf a serious head-on collision between two trains occurred, in which 16 people died.

Until the division of Germany in 1945, the portion Würzburg - Schweinfurt still traveled by long distance trains towards Thuringia and Saxony, since the trains usually ended Hof in Upper Franconia.

In 1978, as on many routes in the seventies and eighties, a fast regional traffic introduced, with the accompanied the closure of many stations and stops. After the reunification wrong until 2001 Inter Regio trains on relation Stuttgart - Würzburg - Erfurt.

Tariff zones

Parts of the route are in the traffic group MainFranken (VVM ) and integrated into the regional transport system Nürnberg ( VGN ). Between Würzburg Hbf and Bergtheim the tariff of the VVM is true. Between Oberhaid and Bamberg applies after the recording of the county and the city of Bamberg in the composite since 1 January 2010, the tariff of the VGN. For single and erupting trips from the two networks, as well as rides on the route Bergtheim - Oberhaid, the tariffs of the German Bahn AG apply. It is intended to include the county Haßberge to 2012 in the VGN. This would be the route Oberhaid - concern Haßfurt collectively. There are also plans for a candidate of the district of Schweinfurt to VVM. Thus, the route would Würzburg - Schweinfurt city railway station completely in the VVM, the route Bamberg - Haßfurt completely in the VGN.

Transport supply

(As Timetable 2006 /2007) Regional - Express trains since the timetable change in December 2004, mostly in a so-called " overlapping every two hours ." This means that multiple lines, run the all every two hours, supplemented by overlays to an hourly offer. Specifically, are the following lines:

  • Würzburg - Schweinfurt - Bad Kissingen / Mellrichstadt - Suhl - Erfurt
  • Würzburg - Schweinfurt - Haßfurt - Bamberg - Lichtenfels - Hof / Bayreuth
  • Würzburg - Schweinfurt - Haßfurt - Bamberg - Forchheim - Erlangen - Fürth - Nürnberg

These three lines and two more are part of the new regional express concept for North francs, which until December 2005 was in stages from December 2004. Is part of the new concept that almost all major lines along the axis of Würzburg - a regional express -hour clock is offered yard.

On the three lines exclusively modern vehicles are used. The first two lines are due to their winding routing with tilting trains series 612 operated mostly in triple traction. On the line Schweinfurt - Nuremberg wrong from December 2004 first locomotives of the series 111 with five double -deck cars (built in 1997), but only reached a top speed of 140 km / hr. But in order for the necessary hourly corner connection to the line Erfurt - be able to produce Würzburg, were 160 km / h fast trains needed. Therefore, the DB Regio AG purchased eight new five -car sets, which have accelerated the line in December 2005, together with eight new locomotives of the series 146 by a few minutes. Holding stations for the Regional Express on the 100 km long distance are only Bamberg, Haßfurt, Schweinfurt and Würzburg Hbf Main Station

Regional trains compress addition, the Regional Express offering. Offered is the hourly line Würzburg - Schweinfurt, which is continued every two hours to get to Bamberg. The Erfurt train sets on their lines exclusively a modern diesel railcars of the type Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1.

Future Development

That section of the Schweinfurt - Haßfurt only every two hours traveled by regional rail trains, can be explained by the fact that there all intermediate stations were shut down. The Traffic Club Germany (VCD), however, calls for the reactivation of some stations and the Binding of Erfurt trains at least until plantations, where the opening of the railway breakpoint is provided in December 2014.

In June 2006, the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG ) has to operate the commuter trains around Würzburg out at European level. The routes include the regional train connection Würzburg - Bamberg. The tender period is 11 years. On 9 February 2007, the decision was made to award the market after 2010 to the DB Regio AG. In addition to the introduction of a general hourly service to Schweinfurt on all weekdays the years ending in Schweinfurt trains will also be continued to the town's train station and no longer have to call the central station. The required measures were enforced to the timetable change on 12 December 2010. In the two- hour guided regional express line from Nuremberg via Schweinfurt to Wurzburg should the timetable change in 2011 also occur a change: Due to the announcement of the e- network francs by the Bay. Railway company was to be provided to operate this line with new railcars of Class 442. Due to the incomplete registration ( train split not yet approved ) and delayed delivery of these railcars will be offered the previous concept in the meantime. The RE- connection Würzbung-Bamberg-Lichtenfels-Bayreuth/Hof faces the dichotomy. This is because the DB Regio francs the call in the area of Main-Spessart won early 2013 happens. As of December 2013, it consists of the route (Frankfurt ) Würzburg- Bamberg, which merges into the DB Regio Bayern VB francs and on the other hand the distance Bamberg-Lichtenfels-Bayreuth/Hof in the DB Regio Bayern VB Northeast Bavaria will pass. As of December 2015, a two -hour extension of the Frankfurt coming new TWINDEXX Vario - trains ( new double-decker trains ) from Würzburg to Bamberg is extended. Until then, this area is replaced with vacant in the Munich S -Bahn trains on the RE- connection from December 2013. Also, these are used on the RB- connection of Franconia Railway to optimize the Coradia Continental trains. The connection Bamberg-Bayreuth/Hof is loaded from December 2013 in addition to Regioswinger with coming from Erfurt diesel railcars of Class 641.
