XML Signature

The XML Signature specification ( also XMLDsig ) defines an XML syntax for digital signatures. In her role, she is similar to the PKCS # 7 standard, but it is easier to extend and specialize in signing XML documents. It finds use in many secondary web standards like SOAP, SAML, or the German online banking system FinTS.

With XML signatures of each type data can be signed, unless they have been embedded in the XML document or the signature can be addressed with a URL - the former is referred to as the enveloped signature, the latter as detached ( detached ) signature.
