Zastavna

Zastavna (Ukrainian and Russian Заставна; Zastawna German, Romanian Zastavna, Polish Zastawna ) is a Rajonshauptstadt in the Ukrainian Chernivtsi Oblast. It lies about 25 km west of Czernowitz, the name means " under the ponds " and derives from the situation on the many ponds around.

The city was first mentioned in writing in 1589 and was until 1774 the Principality of Moldavia. From 1774 to 1918 he was a part of Austria -Hungary and from 1849 in Bukowina.
