Ziethen, Brandenburg

Ziethenstraße is a municipality on the northeastern edge of the district Barnim, on the border with Uckermark. It was formed February 1, 2002 from the neighboring villages wholesale Ziethenstraße and Kleinziethen.

History

Here were French Protestant refugees, called Réfugiés or Huguenots, a new home in Brandenburg. In 1686 the first 16 refugee families were settled ( from Hainaut in present-day Belgium ) in Kleinziethen. The location must have at that time already exists, however, was largely deserted. Emerged in both villages gradually colonists communities, each with a church and a preacher, school and teacher.

The immigrants brought from France with fine fruit and vegetables and resulted in Uckermark a growing tobacco. The latter in particular was a much more profitable business than the cereal production of the native population. The bailiffs of the surrounding communities attempted to curtail the privileges of the Huguenot families. In contrast, however, the Ziethener were able to successfully defend themselves.
