Del M. Clawson

Delwin Morgan " Del " Clawson ( born January 11, 1914 in Thatcher, Arizona; † 5 May 1992 in Downey, California ) was an American politician. Between 1963 and 1978 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Del Clawson attended the public schools in Arizona. In 1934 he graduated from the Gila College in his native Thatcher. Between 1934 and 1940 he worked in various jobs in his homeland. In 1941 he worked for the United States Employment Service; 1942-1947 he was in the service of the Federal Authority for social housing ( Federal Public Housing Authority) in Arizona and California. Thereafter, he served 1947-1963 as manager of the Mutual Housing Association in Compton, California. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. Between 1953 and 1957 he was a member of the council of Compton, after which he was from 1957 to 1961 mayor of this city.

After the death of Representatives Clyde Doyle Clawson was in the overdue election for the 23 seats of California as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 11 June 1963. After seven elections he was able to complete almost eight legislatures in Congress until his resignation on 31 December 1978. Since 1975, he represented the 33rd electoral district of his state in Congress. In his time as a congressman fell among other things, the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal and domestic politics, the final phase of the civil rights movement.

1978 renounced Del Clawson on another candidacy. He resigned on December 31, 1978, four days before the official end of the legislature, of his mandate back. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, he withdrew into retirement. He died on 5 May 1992 in Downey.
