Hugh S. Hersman

Hugh Steel Hersman ( born July 8, 1872 in Port Deposit, Cecil County, Maryland, † March 7, 1954 in San Francisco, California ) was an American politician. Between 1919 and 1921 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1881 Hugh Hersman came with his parents to California, Berkeley. He attended the public schools of his new home. Then he studied until 1893 at the South Western Presbyterian University in Tennessee and then 1897-1898 at the University of California at Berkeley. Subsequently, he was active in the banking industry. Between 1914 and 1918 he was president of the First National Bank in Gilroy. He also worked in various other companies in senior management. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career.

In the congressional elections of 1918, Hersman was in the eighth electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Everis A. Hayes on March 4, 1919. Since he has not been confirmed in 1920, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1921. In 1920 the 19th Amendment was ratified, by the women's suffrage was introduced nationwide.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives was Hugh Hersman board member of the American Trust Co. in Gilroy. He died on March 7, 1954 in San Francisco.
