Viggianello

Viggianello ( in the local dialect: Vingianieddu ) is a Southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3084 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Potenza, in the Basilicata. The municipality is situated approximately 77.5 kilometers south-southeast of Potenza and directly borders the province of Cosenza. Viggianello is part of the Comunità Montana Alto Sinni and is situated in the Parco Nazionale del Pollino. The municipality also the Lao springs.

History

The first mention of the place is the Castrum Byanella at Via Popilia. In the Bull of Alfano 1079 the archbishop of Salerno mentions the place Vineanellum. In a Greek document, however, taken the place emerges again as Byanelli.
