1953 German Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of Germany 1953 was held on August 2nd place at the Nurburgring and was the seventh of nine races of the Formula 1 season 1953.

Background

Before the start of the title defense of Ascari was almost fixed. Until then he had reached 33.5 of the 36 possible according to the rules in season points. Only Hawthorn and Fangio had, however, a minimal chance of the title, they should win all still be standing race while turning the fastest lap, Ascari maximum of 1 point achieved (no points at Fangio ), so Hawthorn came on 35 and Fangio on 34 points and could not catch him.

José González Froilán had been injured in a sports car race in Lisbon a week ago and fell for the rest of the season. While he was still on the entry list, but the Maserati team went to only three drivers ( Fangio, Marimon and Bonetto ). Training

In training only Ascari achieved a lap time of under 10 minutes, and thus secured the pole position ahead of Fangio, Farina and Hawthorn. Race

The start Fangio won, but Ascari was able to overtake him in the course of the first round and end this with a lead of 10 seconds on the chasing pack. With this car he turned the fastest lap ( 9:56,0 ), but on lap 15 he had to turn it off with engine failure at the box. Still, he could celebrate the title defense at the end of the race, because none of his remaining rivals had won the race.
