1961–62 European Cup Winners' Cup

The European Cup Winners 'Cup 1961/62 was the second playout of the competition of European Football Cup Winners' Cup. For the first time the competition has been organized by UEFA. 23 club teams took part, including the defending champion and current Italian Cup Winners' Cup Fiorentina, another 19 reigning Cup winner and three inferior Cup finalists ( Leicester City, Spartak Varna and Dynamo Žilina). Hungary despatched with the Újpesti Dózsa SC again the runner-up, there was a nationwide cup competition until 1964.

From Germany were DFB-Pokal winner Werder Bremen, from the GDR of fdgb Cup winners SC Motor Jena, from Austria ÖFB Cup Winner SK Rapid Wien and from Switzerland FC La Chaux -de-Fonds at the start.

Since the first final match on 10 May 1962 at Hampden Park in Glasgow ended 1:1 and the upcoming soccer World Cup is no way for a timely replay was, the winner was not determined until four months later. In the Stuttgart Neckar stadium Atlético Madrid sat on September 5 against the defending champion Fiorentina by 3-0.

Scorer was Janos Göröcs from Újpesti Dózsa SC with eight goals.

Mode

The participants played as in the previous pure Cup mode with return games the winner from. In Torgleichstand Overtime in the second leg, it would come to a playoff on neutral ground. The away goals rule was not yet considered. The final was decided from this season on one game at a neutral venue. However, here a replay was scheduled at the score is level after extra time, since a penalty shootout was not provided.

First round

The first legs were held to 16 October, the return matches from September 27 to October 18, 1961 September 7.

2nd round

The first legs were held until December 17, the return matches from November 1 to December 19, 1961 October 25.

Quarterfinals

The first legs took place on January 17 and 13./21./22. February, the return matches on 28./20./27. and February 25, 1962 instead.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on 21./28. March and the return legs on April 11, 1962 instead.
